At least 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
