Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these medications need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
